When I first started cleaning my bathrooms on my own, it grossed me out. I began using Lysol wipes to clean surfaces and tubs, and use the wasteful disposable toilet bowl sponge and stick cleaner.
I continued to use money-wasting Lysol wipes, but got rid of the money-wasting sponge and stick, and got a reusable toilet bowl brush. For a toilet bowl cleaner, I found we can simply use vinegar and baking soda. But that did not get rid of stains.
Now, in my trailer home, I felt the wipes did not clean it effectively. I wanted to find a simple, better, effective way to clean the bathrooms so they could actually feel CLEAN!
The other thing that bothered me a lot is SOAP SCUM in the tub. I didn’t know how to get rid of it. Finally I learned of Mr. Clean Scrub. It worked great, but I still have to keep buying it.
Looking for videos, I found on Clean My Space, a simple routine to cleaning the bathroom. On top of that, I decided to finally use what my mother uses: Comet.
Why did I waste so much time and money and waste when I could have just learned and done what my mother did. Being a stay-at-home mom, she used the cheapest product that actually cleans!
Now I clean the bathroom this way:
1. Sprinkle the Comet in the toilet bowl (to let it sit and work).
2. Clear off the sink counter and do the mirror (I am using up what I have of the blue glass cleaner before I try the water and vinegar mixture).
3. I sprinkle the Comet on the sink counter and wet a rag to then scrub that surface. I rinse the rag and wipe the soap off. It takes away the soap scum in the sink as well!
4. Next is the shower. I use a re-washable liner, so I throw that in the washer. I use the rag to wet the wall and tub, sprinkle Comet on it all, and scrub from top to bottom. Once I get to the soap scum, I scrub it and in no time it feels smooth! IT IS AMAZING! Then I rinse the rag and wipe away the soap from top to bottom.
5. Lastly I do the toilet. I sprinkle Comet on it and begin scrubbing with the wet rag from top to bottom. Then I rinse the rag and wipe the soap off. After, I use a toilet brush, scrub the bowl and flush! I put the seat down on the brush to hold it over the bowl to drip dry before I put it away.
Side Note: my mother never used a brush. She would clean the bowl by hand and arm! That is amazing and I wish to be that thorough, but I am still grossed out by it.
I feel so much better now, using Comet. It costs less than $3.00, cleans soap scum, and has multiple uses! You can use it in the kitchen too! I cleaned kitchen pan bottoms of the rust with it, and I even cleaned the kitchen sink with it! If Comet is a concern for the environment, there are other alternatives like Bar Keepers Friend and Bon Ami, but they cost more than Comet. I am interested in trying the alternatives in the future.
